ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

As an administrative assistant, you will be responsible for various tasks around the office. The administrative assistant will work directly with Carol Mosley, the US director of BRIDGES. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to: checking and responding to emails, filing, answering the telephone, printing and creating BRIDGES literature, and any other unforeseen tasks that may arise.

GRANT WRITING

BRIDGES is seeking a Grant Writing intern as well. During these times of economic hardship it is essential that BRIDGES is able to finance our projects even when private donations are few. If you are interested in learning about grant-writing and working on a variety of grant proposals, BRIDGES would be very happy to work with you.

TECH/COMPUTER PERSON (OR WEBSITE MAINTENANCE)

As our all-around tech person, you would be responsible for the maintenance of our new website. We have many materials and articles that need to be posted to the site, so the bulk of this internship would deal directly with that. The website is edited using wordpress, so any knowledge of that program would be nice. In addition, we would like to have someone with a general knowledge of HTML, but any computer knowledge would be great.

VOLUNTEER, FUNDRAISING, & EVENTS COORDINATOR

If you prefer hands-on experience, perhaps you would enjoy being our volunteer, fundraising, and events coordinator intern. BRIDGES puts on many events and fundraisers throughout the year and is always looking for exciting new ideas to get our name and projects out there. If you are creative, friendly, and organized, then BRIDGES would be happy to have you as our intern in this area!

BRIDGES INTERNET OUTREACH FROM HOME

The intern holding this position would work from home, for the most part. One of BRIDGES’ goals is to create and maintain relationships with other organizations who have missions similar to ours. The Outreach intern would be responsible for organizing “link swaps” with other organization’s websites. Also, perhaps most importantly, we would like to focus on using the full capabilities of the internet to gain awareness about BRIDGES’ projects and programs. We will supply you with PDF files of all relevant BRIDGES literature.

COORDINATION FOR PROJECTS ABROAD – Spanish speaker preferred

If you choose to apply for this internship, it is advised that you have prior knowledge about BRIDGES’ projects. This job would provide you the opportunity to work with any of BRIDGES’ particular projects and make recommendations to improve them or make them run more efficiently. This would require working directly with Carol Mosley, the US director of BRIDGES, and keeping close contact (through email or phone conversations) with the people running our projects on the ground.

100_4836We know that we would not be able to do all of the work we do without the help and support of our amazing volunteers. Whether it be helping with outreach, volunteering abroad at one of our sites, or being involved with one of our local events and fundraisers, we truly appreciate what you do.

We would love to have your help!

BABUFBridges Across Borders is very excited to announce the creation of a new BAB Student Group at the University of Florida in Gainesville. After a year of paperwork and headache, BABUF has finally become official on campus! Complete with four officers and a growing base of members, BABUF is quickly becoming well-known on the UF campus as well as in the community. But even though the process of becoming official was long, it didn’t take them long to get into the swing of things! They have already put on three yard sale FUNdraisers and played an integral part in planning and working our 2nd Annual Viva La Mujer event!

We are very excited to share this slideshow with you. It contains many pictures of people and places in Jaque, Darien, Panama that are near and dear to our heart. This is where we do the majority of our work and we hope that someday you can join us here!

Jaque SchoolWe continue to support the growth of the year-old High School for the Earth in Jaque, Darien, Panama. BRIDGES, along with other Panamanian groups, is supporting Colegio de la Tierra which provides high-school level education for indigenous and other young people in Jaque. This is a huge boon for this isolated coastal jungle community, where previously parents were forced to choose between sending their children off to expensive residential schools in Panama City or forgoing their children’s secondary education. The school’s focus on teaching these indigenous youth sustainable forestry and the scientific study of the local ecology is right in line with BAB’s mission to “preserve ancient cultures and ancient species.” We are looking forward to the possibility of expanding the school’s curriculum to include the 12th grade, and we are always interested in recruiting teachers, interns and volunteers to assist with the programs. Can you help us by making a donation to support expansion of the school’s educational programs? Perhaps you’d like to donate your time and your passion to working directly with these young people, to aid them in their quest for knowledge that will help them preserve and protect their people’s delicately balanced relationship with the incredibly diverse natural world that surrounds them.

tortugitasOver the course of our time working in Darien, Panama, we have released thousands of baby turtles back to sea. Since the turtle eggs are a food source for the local people, we have set up an arrangement for turtle eggs to be collected, reburied in a protected area, and a fee paid so as to purchase chicken eggs instead. No one can describe the joy of witnessing the hatchlings headed out to sea to face the treacherous challenge of life.

The Turtle Preservation project is really continuing to thrive! We now have the capacity to adopt 150-250 nests, and we need the help of people like you to make that happen! If you are interested in becoming an adoptive parent, please let us know. For a $20 donation, you will receive a BAB certificate of adoption of a nest, along with an attached tagua (vegetable ivory) carved turtle, while helping to ensure this program’s continued growth. For $20 you will be helping to release 100-150 baby sea turtles into the sea.
